He is a Doctor of Philology (1973) and a Professor. From 1999 to 2004, he was a member of the 5th convocation of the Parliament of Georgia.
He graduated from the Journalism Department of the Philology Faculty of Tbilisi State University in 1964. After graduating, he studied at the postgraduate course of Tbilisi State University from 1964 to 1966. From 1966 to 2006, he worked at Tbilisi State University, initially as an assistant professor and subsequently as a senior lecturer, associate professor, and full professor. He then became the head of the Department of History of Modern Georgian Literature. Later, he served as the head of the department of Cultural Studies and became a full professor at the Technical University of Georgia.
He has been a member of the Georgian Federation of Journalists since 1970. From 1987 to 1990, he was the editor-in-chief of the magazine "Kritiki," and from 1993 to 1999, he served as the editor-in-chief of the magazine "Nugeshi." He is also the Chairman of the Editorial Board of "Mtserlis Gazeti."
