Independence Day of Bangladesh

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's Independence that commemorates the country’s declaration of sovereignty in 1971.

Newham Council hosts an online webinar "Heritage, culture and tradition: being British, Bangladeshi & me" to explore and celebrate the intertwined histories of British Bangladeshi communities and their contributions to the wider social and cultural aspects of British life.

80th anniversary

One of Britain’s leading public intellectuals, Professor Richard Dawkins celebrates his 80th birthday today.

In 1976, his book "The Selfish Gene" was published that established Professor Dawkins as a leading figure in evolutionary theory, which polularised the idea that replicating genes are the central force behind evolution, not individual organisms or species.

In Memory: Nodar Tabidze

Nodar Tabidze, professor of journalism, would become 90 today. He authored dozens of monographs and books and hundreds of articles and brought up every Georgian journalist during his 50-year teaching career at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. He was a nephew of Galaktion Tabidze, "King of poetry".

Obituary: Data Vanishvili

David 'Data' Vanishvili, 88, who guarded his ancestral land against the Russian annexationists, deceased. Generally known by an affectionate diminutive of his given name, Granddad Data became the symbol of resistance of 'creeping occupation' as he bravely kept his Georgian citizenship, sneaking over the barbed wire territory to take part in the General Elections each time since 2011, and then going back home bravely to live with his wife Valia in his birthplace house in Khurvaleti village. Mr Vanishvili has been held captive by the occupation regime forces several times only because he crossed the barbed wire to enter the territory controlled by the Georgian government.

Berikaoba 2021

Every year, before Lent starts, a Georgian pagan ritual Berikaoba occurs. The noted Georgian photo artist Badri Vadachkoria visited Great Chailuri in the Kakheti region, Georgia, to catch the glimpse of the modern celebration of Berikaoba Day. During the pandemic, when no event can be held in the usual way, he generously shared impressions through his photographs.
