Opera Crown
From 20 November to 25 November 2023, the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre hosts the 3rd International Voice Competition "Opera Crown".
This biannual competition takes place in the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi, offering contestants from all over the world the most welcoming atmosphere to perform at their best. The competition is open to young opera singers. There is an age limit for the contestants: the competition is open to women between 21 and 30 and men between 22 and 32. There will be no exceptions to this rule.
The competition consists of a preliminary audition and three rounds. Preliminary audition will take place from 1 July to 20 October 2023. The candidate must send an application form filled out in Georgian or in English, along with high-quality video recording made within last six months, to the following email address: operacrowntbilisi@gmail.com. The video recording must include two arias of applicant’s choice (max. 15 min). During preliminary audition, 50 singers will be chosen to compete in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Three Rounds include the following requests:
- Round One: a contestant will sing two arias with piano.
- Round Two: a contestant will sing two arias with piano.
- Round Three: a contestant will sing two arias with the orchestra.
The contestants must perform all arias in the original language and original key. The last round and the final concert are streamed live on OperaVision.
The Competition Committee provides a contestant with an official accompanist throughout the Competition, free of charge. Contestants may bring a pianist of their choice at their own expense.
The Competition Committee provides the singers selected in the preliminary audition for the first round with accommodation in Tbilisi, covering the hotel expenses (bed and breakfast) for the contestants until the panel eliminates a singer from the Competition. The reservation refers to shared accommodation.
"Opera Crown" aims to discover and facilitate the promotion of young opera talents by giving them the opportunity to be heard by a panel of top opera professionals – artistic and casting directors from the world's best opera houses. Badri Maisuradze, Artistic Director of the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre, chairs the jury. This year panel includes:
- Peter Mario Katona, Director of Casting at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (UK)
- Samuel Gelber, Director of Artistic Planning at the Washington National Opera (USA)
- Sarah-Jane Davies, Head of Casting at the Scottish Opera (UK)
- Virginio Fedeli, Producer and Artist Manager at Atelier Musicale International (Italy)
- Robert Körner, Director of Casting at Wiener Staatsoper (Austria)
- Elisabete Matos, Artistic Director of Teatro Nacional de São Carlos (Portugal)
- Henning Ruhe, Artistic Director of Göteborg Opera (Sweden)
- Alessio Vlad, Artistic Director of Teatro Regio di Parma (Italy)
