Obituary: Tengiz Archvadze
Legendary Georgian actor of cinema and theatre, Tengiz Archvadze, 91, passed away, according to Kote Marjanishvili Theatre.
Tengiz Archvadze was born on 3 August 1932 in Tbilisi, Georgia. In 1956, after graduating from Tbilisi Shota Rustaveli State Theatre Institute, he started to work at Kote Marjanishvili State Theatre. From 1967 to 1972, he was a member of Rustavi Theatre. In 1973, he moved back to Kote Marjanishvili Theatre.
In 1960, the film studio Georgian Film started to offer Tengiz Archvadze leading roles. He played in 46 movies: Kind People (1961), Under the Same Sky (1961), Khevisberi Gocha (1964), I Can See the Sun (1965), Meeting In the Mountain (1966), Meeting with the Past (1966), Khevsurian Ballad (1966), Spring Will Come Soon (1967), Right hand of the Master (1969), The World (1971), Before Sunrise (1971), Reflection (1974), Gem (1976), Data Tutashkhia (1977), Book of Oaths (1983), Monday Is a Regular Day (1984), Before the Rain Passes (1984), Spiral (1990), Swede Prince from Imereti (1995), My dear grandfather (1998), Antimose of Iveria (2001), Another Georgian story (2003), and others.
Tengiz Archvadze received many awards and prizes. In 2020, he became an honorary citizen of Rustavi, and in 2022, an honorary citizen of Tbilisi. In 1967, he received the title of Honored Artist of Georgia, in 1979, the title of People's Artist of Georgia, and in 2017, he was awarded the title of "Priest of Arts". The immensely talented Georgian actor also received the Presidential Order of Excellence, the Order of Merit, and the Shota Rustaveli State Prize.
In March 2018, the head of the Georgian Royal House, Royal Prince Nugzar Bagrationi, awarded the title of lord to the beloved actor of the Georgian people, the legend of Georgian cinema, Tengiz Archvadze.
Tengiz Archvadze was not just a legend of Georgian cinematography but a symbol of professionalism, exceptional generosity, and human modesty. And he will forever remain such in the memories of his fellow Georgians.
