Academy Elections 2023

Academician Roin Metreveli is elected the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia.

The presidential elections were held on 7 June 2023 at the General Meeting of the Academy at the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia, which discussed the organisational issues.

Roin Metreveli is a Georgian scholar and statesman, historian, medievalist, Caucasiologist, prominent public figure, Doctor of Historical Sciences (since 1974), Professor (since 1977), and Academician of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (since 1993). He is the author of more than 300 books and researches. He edited about 100 books and articles. Roin Metreveli regularly participates in world congresses of historians and scientific conferences.

From 1972 to 1985, Roin Metreveli was an editor and publisher of the Georgian National Universal Encyclopaedia.

From 1985 to 1989, he was the President of the Tbilisi Pedagogical Institute.

On 9 April 1991, as a Member of the Parliament of Georgia, Dr Metreveli signed the act of restoration of independence of Georgia.

From 1991 to 2004, he was the President of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (Tbilisi, Georgia). Under his leadership, Tbilisi State University regained its autonomy, which was seized by the Soviet Regime in 1926.

From 2005 to 2013, he served as the secretary of the Department of Civil Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences.

From 2013 to 2023, Roin Metreveli was Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia.

Roin Metreveli is a member of the California Academy of Art, Science and Education (since 1996), a member of the European Academy of Science and Art (Salzburg, Austria), an honorary member of the International Association of the Young Diplomats, President of the National Academy of Political Sciences (since 2013), Academician at the Academy of the National and Social Relations (since 2004).

Roin Metreveli received the Georgian State Award in Science (1988), Ivane Javakhishvili Award (1999), Akaki Tsereteli Award (2000), Academy Award (2010), and Shota Meskhia Award (2012). He was awarded the title of Honoured Scientist of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia (1996).
