On 17 January 2019, the 100th anniversary of the newspaper Sakartvelos Respublika (Georgian for: “Republic of Georgia”) was held in the council chamber of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences.
The event was chaired by Vice-president of Georgian National Academy of Sciences, Academician Roin Metreveli. The current editor of the Sakartvelos Respublika, Spartak Kobulia presented a thorough account of the major challenges faced by the print media during the modern boost of Information Technology and underlined the importance of preservation and development of the Georgian newspaper with a 100-year legacy.
Mr Tamaz Shilakadze suggested appointing a board of trustees that would have responsibility for strategic planning and management of the newspaper.
His offer was accepted and eagerly welcomed by Academician Avtandil Arabuli; President of Association Dialogue of Cultures XXI, Professor Valeri Asatiani; Honoured Journalist of Georgia and public figure, Nugzar Popkhadze; Professor Diana Tkebuchava; Professor Giorgi Gogolashvili; journalist and educator, Nugzar Rukhadze; Shota Rustaveli Society chairman and poet, Davit Shemokmedeli; authors and readers of the newspaper who was present at the event.
Georgian Women for Peace and Life Association President, Professor Maia Kvezereli-Kopadze expressed her readiness to join the board of trustees; the Editorial Board of Sakartvelos Respublika received a special certificate and a gold medal from her on behalf of the Association.
The Chairman of Creative Union of Georgian Journalists, Marina Tektumanidze stated that she would do anything required to gain "the status of an item of the tangible cultural heritage of Georgia" for the one and only centennial newspaper the country has. The Editorial Board of Sakartvelos Respublika received an honorary certificate and a gold-plated icon of St George from her on behalf of the Union.
Vice-president of Georgian Writers Creative Union, poet and TV presenter Makvala Gonashvili awarded Sub-editor of Sakartvelos Respublika, prominent translator and author, Guram Gogiashvili with the Ilia Chavchavadze Prize.
The honorary title of Georgian Heritage Trustees received noted journalists: Spartak Kobulia, Aleko Aslanishvili, Mamuka Vashakidze, and Otar Turabelidze.
