Tbilisoba 2026

Tbilisoba, or the Tbilisi City Festival, celebrates Georgia’s capital. With a history dating back to the early sixth century, the city has been burned down twenty-six times by invading armies. Yet Tbilisi – unique and striking – has risen again each time like a phoenix, growing ever more beautiful and resilient. As one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited capitals, Tbilisi is renowned for its multiculturalism, tolerance, and hospitality.

Tbilisi is a “warm” city, not only because of its climate but also because of its warm-hearted people, who share autumn’s bounty and the distinctive culture of everyday city life with everyone. Thus, Tbilisoba traditionally welcomes everyone who loves Tbilisi for its diversity and history, as well as those eager to discover the city and experience its magic for the first time.

This annual autumn festival was first held in Tbilisi on 28 October 1979 and was traditionally scheduled for either the last or the penultimate weekend of October. The programme brought together a wide range of cultural activities, sports competitions, concerts celebrating Georgian folk arts and those of ethnic minorities, exhibitions and sales, and agricultural fairs. The festivities also drew on traditions associated with Georgian historic festivals such as Berikaoba, Keenoba, Teletoba, and Maisoba, incorporating them into the wider festival atmosphere. The celebrations were centred in Old Tbilisi, the historic quarter of the Georgian capital. That same day, the title of Honorary Citizen of Tbilisi was conferred on distinguished individuals from a range of fields.

In the early 1990s, this traditional event was cancelled for several years. It was revived in 1997 and has continued annually ever since. In recent years, Tbilisoba has been moved to the first weekend of October – so as to guarantee more favourable weather – and has expanded from a single location in Old Tbilisi to multiple venues across the city.
