Obituary: Oliver Mtukudzi

Oliver 'Tuku' Mtukudzi, the internationally acclaimed Zimbabwean Jazz legend, passed away at the age of 66.

He primarily sang in Shona, but he also sang in Ndebele and English, showcasing a rich blend of Southern African musical styles. By experimenting with genres such as mbira, mbaqanga, jit, and the traditional drumming of the Korekore people, he created a unique sound known as "Tuku music." His deep, husky voice became synonymous with Zimbabwean music.

However, Tuku was more than just a celebrated musician; he was also a savvy businessman, philanthropist, and human rights activist. He served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for the Southern Africa region.

One of his notable tracks, "Wasakara" ("You Are Getting Old"), from the successful album Bvuma ("Tolerance"), released in 2000, reflects the poignant reality of ageing—a story about an old man coming to terms with the passage of time. The University of Zimbabwe denied him an honorary degree because it viewed this very song as critical of former President Robert Mugabe. Tuku himself never confirmed whether he intended to comment on Mugabe, maintaining an apolitical stance. He wisely suggested that the interpretations of his music were ultimately up to his fans.

In 2014, the Great Zimbabwe University awarded him a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Ethno-Musicology and Choreography in recognition of his contributions to the arts. Tuku lived long enough to witness a significant shift in his homeland when, in November 2017, the then 93-year-old Mugabe resigned amid rising calls for his impeachment, marking the end of his nearly 40-year reign.

Born on 22nd September 1952 in Highfield, a suburb of Harare, Oliver Mtukudzi passed away on 23rd January at Avenues Clinic in the capital. He has left a remarkable legacy that future generations will cherish. His timeless lyrics will forever echo: “Bvuma, Bvuma Chete, Bvuma Wasakara, Bvuma Waunyana" ("Accept, accept that you are on the wane; accept now that you have wrinkles on your skin").
