Honouring Academician Vladimer Papava: Celebrating 70 Years of Life and 50 Years of Impact in Economic Science

Lado Papava – 70

Academician Vladimer "Lado" Papava celebrates his 70th birthday today. This occasion marks an impressive 50 years of dedicated service in science and education. As the Academician-Secretary of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, a professor at Tbilisi State University, and Chief Researcher at the Paata Gugushvili Institute of Economics, he has made significant contributions to the advancement of economic science in Georgia. His research has gained recognition at major international forums, earning accolades from some of the world’s leading economists.

Our society acknowledges his impactful roles, including his tenure as Deputy Parliamentary Secretary to the President of Georgia from 2000 to 2001, his service as a member of Parliament from 2004 to 2008, and his contributions to scientific development as Minister of Economy from 1994 to 2000. Notably, Vladimer Papava signed the Constitution of Georgia, adopted in 1995, as a member of the Constitutional Commission.

Academician Papava serves on the boards of several prestigious international and national scientific journals and collections. Two books have been published about his work:

After his election as Rector of Tbilisi State University in 2013, he significantly enhanced the university's scientific activities. In recognition of his remarkable contributions, he became a Corresponding Member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences in 1997 and a Full Member (Academician) in 2013. In 2023, he assumed the role of Academician-Secretary of the Academy. Alongside his scientific pursuits, he actively engages in various public initiatives, consistently addressing the country’s pressing issues through numerous interviews on television, radio, and in newspapers.

Born on 25 March 1955 in Tbilisi to a family of educators, Vladimer Papava graduated with a gold medal from Tbilisi Public School No. 15 in 1972. He then enrolled in Tbilisi State University, majoring in Economic Cybernetics, and graduated with honours in 1977. In 1982, he successfully defended his dissertation at the Central Economic and Mathematical Institute of the Academy of Sciences in Moscow, followed by his doctoral thesis in 1989. Since 1991, Vladimer Papava has actively engaged in extensive scientific, governmental, and public service.

On this momentous occasion, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the TSU Paata Gugushvili Institute of Economics, and many other institutions have extended their congratulations to this eminent scholar.
