Independence Day

In 1870, the US Congress made 4 July a federal holiday. In 1941, the day became a paid holiday for all federal employees. Since the late 19th century, the Fourth of July has become a day of leisure activities and family get-togethers, often involving fireworks and outdoor barbecues.

The tradition of setting fireworks on Independence Day started on 4 July 1777 in Philadelphia, PA. The ship’s cannon fired a 13-gun salute in honour of the 13 colonies. The Pennsylvania Evening Post reported: “At night, there was a grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets) on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.”

Many Georgians found their second home, the land of dreams coming true, or a temporary shelter in the United States. BRAMS Institute wishes them a Very Happy Independence Day in their newfound homeland along with their fellow American citizens.
