A Friend Indeed

Actions confirm true friends and foes.

Russia proudly identifies itself as a Christian country while occupying 20 per cent of Georgia's internationally recognised territory and quietly crawling to grasp even more of the legally and historically Georgian land.

When the Kingdom of Georgia declined in political, economic and military powers in the late 17th century, the Orthodox Christian Greeks did not hesitate to seize the Georgian monasteries in the Holy Land. Even today, they feel free to destroy the old Georgian artefacts and scripts while trying to erase evidence of their past wrongdoing.

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan made the first step towards correcting the historical injustice towards Georgia caused by Christian countries like Greece and Russia. Three hundred years later, the Georgians have returned to the Holy Land thanks to their Muslim brothers: King Abdullah II of Jordan and HRH Prince Ghazi, a first cousin of the King, decided to grant Georgia a 4,000-square-meter piece of land near the site of the baptism of Jesus Christ on the Jordan River. The decision was made public on the Holy Epiphany Day earlier this year.

On 28 and 29 May, a delegation of secular and clergy led by the Prime Minister of Georgia visited the Kingdom of Jordan to sign the agreement. The representatives of Georgia thanked HM King Abdullah II of Jordan, HRH Prince Ghazi, Patriarch Theophilus III of Jerusalem, Archbishop Chrysostomos of Jordan and others involved in making the historic decision on behalf of the government, Orthodox Church of Georgia, and the Georgian people.

As a sign of gratitude, PM Irakli Gharibashvili presented the Order of the Golden Fleece to King Abdullah II of Jordan and a letter of gratefulness from the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia.

BRAMS Institute expresses its appreciation to the Patriarch of Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, the Government of Georgia, HM King Abdullah II of Jordan, HRH Prince Ghazi, and all representatives of secular and ecclesiastical authorities who contributed to the realisation of this happy result for Georgia. May God bless you all!
