The American Studies Institute at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and the Georgian Association for American Studies organise the 3-day scientific event.

14 April is Mother Language Day in the Republic of Georgia. Regardless of their first language, all citizens of the country celebrate the day when the nation and its government have united against the Soviet Russian attempt to deprive the state status of Georgian – one of the oldest living languages, still in use almost unchanged since ancient times.

In 1990, 14 April was officially established as Mother Language Day in Georgia, and this date has been celebrated annually ever since – the first example of the possibility to defeat the Kremlin.

Obituary: Prince Philip

His Royal Highness Prince Philip, 99, passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

An announcement about the death of Queen Elizabeth II's husband and her devoted companion for 73 years was made on the Royal Family's social media accounts as well as the Royal Family's official website. According to the tradition, an official notice of his death was posted on the railings of Buckingham Palace. However, it was removed shortly afterwards to avoid too many people gathering at the spot. Still, lots of public mourners head to Windsor Castle to put tribute notes and leave flowers all across the territory.

Essay contest

This year Dedaena Day is commemorated with an essay contest at Grigol Robakidze University.

Professor Diana Tkebuchava, the head of the Journalism and Mass Communication program, and Assistant Professor Meri Lomia, together with the student participants from Grigol Robakidze University and Tbilisi Open University, arranged a special event to underline the importance of mother language. The two freshmen of the Journalism and Mass Communication program, Lizzie Chimchiuri and Otto Arabidze, will host the contest and also take part in it.

The event will be held online at 14:00 on 17 April 2021.
